Through Our Lens: Heidelberg, Germany

An easy train ride south from Frankfurt, Heidelberg is full of beautiful streets and market squares, cafes, and history. Situated along the banks of the Neckar River, this southeastern German town is a great day trip for anyone wanting to find themselves transported to a fairytale land. Through our lens, discover more about this quaint town and some of our favorite things to do there!

Stop for a beer and Bratwurst at one of the cute cafes found near the old gate or in the market square. Whether you are relaxing and people watching or if you are fueling up for more adventures, you don’t want to miss trying some of the traditional German cuisine.

Take a walk through the Old Bridget Gate (Alto Brucke), and view the homes along the river. Our favorite view of Heidelberg castle is from the bridge's vantage point. Another exciting thing to do is to tour the romantic and medieval Heidelberg Castle and grounds. The ruins are situated on the mountainside above the old town. There is a funicular that will take you up to the castle or you can always work your beer off by walking!

If you have a bit more time, hike the Philosopher's Walk (Philosophenweg) for epic views over the city and river. The name "Philosophers' Walk" can be traced to the fact that Heidelberg's university professors and philosophers would utilize it to discuss serious matters and to contemplate their deeper thoughts. This 2 kilometer walk is a great way to enjoy the charming view of the Neckar.
