Take Heart Homes: A Storied Home with Lindsey Pattillo Keane

From the beginning, Travel Patterns has been founded on the value of being inspired by the different cultures, patterns, and textiles from around the world. We believe that allowing cultures from around the world to impact our lives leads to a uniquely beautiful experience in our homes and in our hearts. We started our “Take Heart Homes” series because we wanted to explore the unique people who live in our community, the spaces they love, and how they bring the World home.

Today’s Take Heart Home is that of Lindsey Pattillo Keane. We loved getting to spend the afternoon with Lindsey and her husband, Cathal, in their beautiful home and learn more about their story. Our favorite feature about their home is that it is so easy to see the story of their lives and relationship play out on the walls. We can’t wait for you to hear more about their home so keep reading all about them below!

Introduce Yourself

LINDSEY: I’m Lindsey Pattillo Keane and I live with my husband, Cathal Keane, and our rescue Terrier/ Chihuahua, Pip Keane. I’m in charge of Marketing and Property Activation for several large commercial real estate projects in the region. I have an Interior Design degree and a Masters in Business. I’ve been working in hospitality, events, marketing, and community development for my entire career. Cathal has been in medical school for the past 5 years and is wrapping up his journey now. Pip Keane was rescued from Houston, TX and we had a friend drive him to Huntsville back in August 2018. It was love at first sight. Fun fact is that we were married in Killarney, Ireland. Cathal’s entire family was born in Ireland and he is the first generation born in the US. We went back to his mother’s home county, County Kerry, to get married in May 2018. It was a blast. This is our first home and I bought it when my husband was studying abroad in the UK. He had one request, to live near a trail head, so we lucked out and found the perfect neighborhood, Oak Park.

How do you feel about living in Huntsville? What is your favorite part about where you live?

LINDSEY: I’m born and raised in Huntsville, but lived in Houston and Los Angeles for nearly 10 years. I love being back home because of the scenic beauty. We feel incredibly lucky to be near Monte Sano and are appreciative of the Land Trust of North Alabama for preserving 1000s of acres so we can be on those beautiful trails each week. We love the Huntsville culture, it's friendly, smart, active, and eager. We also love being close to family. After living away for many years, it’s great to be a few miles from lunch or dinner with your loved ones.

How do you find inspiration for decorating your home?

LINDSEY: I am inspired by MANY different styles of design, but at the end of the day there is usually one or two design styles that make a homeowner’s heart sing. Our home does that for us. We have art lead the way and I use my sense of space and color to allow the art to tell a story. Most guests want to walk around and take in all the unique pieces, which we love. It’s great having the art be the conversation starter, because it always leads to interesting and fun discussions. I like reimagining items as well. I feel like we win an imaginary creativity prize if we turn an obvious item into something completely different. Another design principle I focus on is contrast, smooth vs. texture, color vs. neutral, right angles vs. organic shapes, negative vs. positive space, metal vs. wood, modern vs. antique; if you have interesting contrasting items in your home it makes textures more vibrant. For example, silk looks silkier next to a pinecone. Playing with contrast has a powerful and subtle way of making a great impact.

If you had to describe your home style in three words, what would they be?

LINDSEY: Colorful, unexpected, and thoughtful

What is your favorite room in your home?

LINDSEY: Our dining room, which is typically the most unused room in a home, but we made it our own cafe/lounge/reading spot. And I love the color on the walls, Cracked Pepper by Behr.

Do you have a favorite piece in your home? If so, what is it?

LINDSEY: Edgar Media’s “Joyful Day”. Edgar is from Houston and Mexico and he did an incredible job with his abstract version of an aerial view of Mexican terrain. I love both maps and abstract art so his piece resonates well with me and it adds tons of joy to the house. It’s appropriately named!

Any advice for creating a home you love?

LINDSEY: Find images of the home(s) that you love online and use those as a guidepost when you are shopping and bargain hunting. It’s easy to be sidetracked by shiny or affordable items as you design or redesign rooms. If you keep your inspiration images within reach, it will prevent mistaken purchases down the road. Also, I recommend buying art as you travel. Art doesn’t always have to mean 2D rectangular wall art. It can mean a postcard that you frame later, a found object from an antique store that is sculptural and can hang on a nail, or an impressive collection of museum tickets from your travels that are strung on twine with clothespins. Finally, don’t forget the power of a frame. Find a quality local frame shop to help you with making your pieces unique to your abode.

Take Heart. Take Flight.

Our motto - Take Heart. Take Flight. - calls us to courageously search for who we were meant to be, to break free of the fears holding us back, and to boldly pursue the daring adventure set before us. We believe that this journey can be uniquely reflected in our homes as they can display our hearts more clearly than any other piece of our lives. With that in mind, how does your home show a unique piece of your personality and story?

LINDSEY: From the moment you walk into our home, the story starts to unfold. We have fun in our home and enjoy being able to feel both comfortable and inspired by our little haven. People smile when they tour the house and we love that. We were honored to be on the Arts Huntsville Tour of Homes on August 21st, and we hope to illustrate that your home can be any size and still be packed with stories, great art, and affordable pieces all while sharing your own personal story. What do you have to lose?!
